Three Peaks Training http://www.garnertech.co.uk/three-peaks-training/ http://www.garnertech.co.uk/three-peaks-training/#respond Mon, 02 Jun 2014 19:18:30 +0000 http://www.garnertech.co.uk/?p=1166 Last Sunday, five of us headed out for a 23 mile hike across the Chiltern hills along the Ridgeway walk. Finding a hilly area around Hertfordshire where we all can get to relatively easily, is pretty hard. The Ridgeway had a few hills but is mainly a woodland area. We completed 1/4 of the full Ridgeway walk, which started at Ivinghoe Beacon and finished in Chinnor.

Ivinghoe Beacon……….0 Miles
Tring Station………….3.4 Miles
Wigginton……………..1.9 Miles
Wendover……………..6.5 Miles
Princes Risborough…6.5 Miles
Chinnor…………………4.8 Miles
23.1 Miles (plus a bit extra at the start and end)

The aim was to do the walk carrying a full pack (survival gear included) and at a fast pace to try and replicate the type of effort we will need to put in to complete the challenge in 24 hours. We walked the total distance in 7 hours 11 mins (which we are all very pleased with), albeit with blisters, aches, pains and a spot of sunburn! I think it’s fair to say things started to ‘breakdown’ around the 20 mile mark and that was with very good conditions, a good night’s sleep beforehand and with no long resting periods every 6 miles… I think the team will agree with me when I say I’m a little apprehensive about the challenge and it is going to be incredibly tough!

We plan to walk from Ivinghoe Beacon to Wendover and back  again, this Sunday to see how we fair.

The one website http://www.garnertech.co.uk/the-one-website/ http://www.garnertech.co.uk/the-one-website/#comments Sun, 04 May 2014 19:52:51 +0000 http://www.garnertech.co.uk/?p=1141 Your users don’t see of your website as its component parts, so neither should you – at least, not all the time.

A website is the sum of its parts

If you only think about your website as a collection of parts (eg. ecommerce, blog, photo gallery, online booking system), the overall impression to your users will be that of a fragmented website which is lots of parts, bolted together, rather than one seamless, flowing, experience.

Of course, you do need to think about these elements individually at some point, but you should always have the big picture in mind throughout the development and build process.

Content is king

The same goes for your content. Whilst you may have written the content for each page on your site separately, your users will consume it in any order and from any path through your site, so it needs to hang together effectively and present a unified website.

Remember: thanks to search engine deep linking, any page on your site could be a first contact situation with a customer and could be a first impression. You need to ensure that every page creates the right first impression and that your visitors can easily find their way around.

Taking the logo to new dimensions http://www.garnertech.co.uk/taking-the-logo-to-new-dimensions/ http://www.garnertech.co.uk/taking-the-logo-to-new-dimensions/#respond Tue, 08 Apr 2014 21:06:03 +0000 http://www.garnertech.co.uk/?p=1022 We thought we’d take a minute to explain the GarnerTech logo, as created by our graphic designer, Lisa Garner.

To the untrained eye, it may look like a funky, abstract, 3D cube, but the clues are there if you know what you’re looking for.

Nested on two different planes within the logo are the company initials, G and T, highlighted in the images below in blue.
