Charity – GarnerTech – web design in Hertfordshire http://www.garnertech.co.uk Software and web design in Hertfordshire Tue, 08 Sep 2015 21:23:18 +0000 en hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.4.32 Three Peaks Training http://www.garnertech.co.uk/three-peaks-training/ http://www.garnertech.co.uk/three-peaks-training/#respond Mon, 02 Jun 2014 19:18:30 +0000 http://www.garnertech.co.uk/?p=1166 Last Sunday, five of us headed out for a 23 mile hike across the Chiltern hills along the Ridgeway walk. Finding a hilly area around Hertfordshire where we all can get to relatively easily, is pretty hard. The Ridgeway had a few hills but is mainly a woodland area. We completed 1/4 of the full Ridgeway walk, which started at Ivinghoe Beacon and finished in Chinnor.

Ivinghoe Beacon……….0 Miles
Tring Station………….3.4 Miles
Wigginton……………..1.9 Miles
Wendover……………..6.5 Miles
Princes Risborough…6.5 Miles
Chinnor…………………4.8 Miles
23.1 Miles (plus a bit extra at the start and end)

The aim was to do the walk carrying a full pack (survival gear included) and at a fast pace to try and replicate the type of effort we will need to put in to complete the challenge in 24 hours. We walked the total distance in 7 hours 11 mins (which we are all very pleased with), albeit with blisters, aches, pains and a spot of sunburn! I think it’s fair to say things started to ‘breakdown’ around the 20 mile mark and that was with very good conditions, a good night’s sleep beforehand and with no long resting periods every 6 miles… I think the team will agree with me when I say I’m a little apprehensive about the challenge and it is going to be incredibly tough!

We plan to walk from Ivinghoe Beacon to Wendover and back  again, this Sunday to see how we fair.

The ‘Plan’ http://www.garnertech.co.uk/the-plan/ http://www.garnertech.co.uk/the-plan/#respond Mon, 12 May 2014 19:00:34 +0000 http://www.garnertech.co.uk/?p=1151 With the 3 Peaks Challenge rapidly approaching, the enormity of the challenge is really starting to kick in. I’ve started to get some of the gear I need: walking boots, waterproof jacket and trousers etc.; I just need to wear them in a bit before the big day. The marathon distance walk scheduled for this weekend will help with that one and I’ll probably be shocked into doing even more work at the gym. Deciding the right pace and cardio to do is hard to gauge without some practice runs.

There are several strategies for the 3 Peaks Challenge, with various pros and cons for each. We’ve decide to to set off on Friday 27th June in a minibus full of supplies and head up to Fort William where we’ll crash for the night.

Saturday 28th June…is where the real challenge begins…

  • 07:00 – 12:00 = Climb Ben Nevis
  • 12:00 – 17:30 = Drive to Scafell Pike
  • 17:30 – 22:30 = Climb Scafell Pike
  • 22:30 – 02:30 = Drive to Snowdon
  • 02:30 – 06:30 = Climb Snowdon
  • 06:30 = Chill out with an early-morning beer and celebrate!

Right, I’m off to the gym….

Three Peaks Challenge http://www.garnertech.co.uk/three-peaks-challenge/ http://www.garnertech.co.uk/three-peaks-challenge/#respond Thu, 24 Apr 2014 16:00:38 +0000 http://www.garnertech.co.uk/?p=1130 I’m not sure what I’ve let myself in for, but on 28-29th June 2014 I will embark on the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation, alongside a team of 9.

The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the highest mountains of Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours, which includes traveling time between them. The three peaks are:

  • Ben Nevis (1,344m)
  • Scafell Pike (978m)
  • Snowdon (1,085m)

The estimated walking distance is 42 kilometers (26 miles) with a total ascent of 3,000 meters.

Let the preparations begin.
